Equinics Information
With trainers and horses recovering from their Equinics trouncing, things have been mighty quiet around the ATC lately. Last week there were only three winners, all of them in maiden races. Two of the winners were from MrLucky's barns: Tommie Idle Hour, who won a maiden claiming race, and Ohmeohymy who broke his maiden in his first start for the Lucky One, after 17 tries for other trainers.
But the most interesting maiden of the week was clearly Knightowl's Mongrel Empire. Mongrel Empire, a 3 year old son of Empire Maker out of an A.P. Indy mare, won convincingly while making his first start on turf, following two dismal tried on dirt.
"I wasn't convinced he was a turf horse, but he'd done so badly on dirt I figured he couldn't be much worse on the grass," Kinghtmare said. "I was probably the most surprised person in the grandstand when he started to pull away in the stretch. I mean, he's got an okay turf pedigree, but nothing to suggest he was capable of that kind of turn around. I guess that just goes to show you, you always gotta try both surfaces."
In spite of the improved showing on turf, Knightmare wasn't ready to make any plans for the horse's future. "Sure, the win is always nice, but it wasn't that big a deal. He only faced four horses, after all, and they weren't an impressive bunch. The speed figure was his best so far, but that's not saying much. He'll need to improve off this to be an allowance horse, and I don't know if he's got it in him. He may be available for claiming soon."
