Al's Griffon Thrives on Dirt
It's been said so often that it's a cliche, "Always try a horse on both surfaces." But cliches get repeated because they're true, and the latest proof of that is Al's Griffon.
Al's Griffon, a 3 year old son of Al Mufti, started five times on turf, with four of those starts coming in Alpine Babies Contest races. He racked up a win, two seconds, and a third before turning to open competition where he finished sixth on an off track. In spite of the good overall record, the speed figures were never better than average, his highest being a 77. His future on grass looked limited, so trainer Dragnil decided it was time for a change.
"Al Mufti is by Roberto, and with Horse Chestnut as dam's sire, Griffon has lots of turf in his pedigree. But there's some dirt there too. I knew 77s wouldn't get the job done against allowance company, and I wasn't ready to drop Griffon into a claiming race, so trying dirt seemed like a good idea."
A good idea, indeed. In his first try on dirt, Al's Griffon racked up his second win by 1/4 length and improved his top speed figure to 84. But last week, in his second start on dirt, Al's Griffon really turned heads.
Pressing the pace all the way, he took over the lead entering the stretch and opened up. He cruised to a comfortable 2-length win, and turned in an impressive 96 speed figure. And he made it all look easy.
"It's hard not to be pleased when you see a win like that," Dragnil said. "He was just cruising out there. If he can run back to that, I'll have to try him in a stakes. He deserves a shot."
